Template

The below is a community member's testimony.  Feel free to use it, something of your own (recommended), or something as simple as as  "I oppose LD 1378, and "it ought not to pass."  To get other wording ideas, as online testimony is submitted for this bill, you can see it here: https://keepmainesafe.com/the-facts-1#b1197509-aff4-48ed-9ffb-5b1c39ee1535 after clicking on the bill number.

I oppose LD 1378 “An Act to Protect Maine Communities by Enacting the Extreme Risk Protection Order Act.”

Here we go again, another attempt at unconstitutional gun control.  Another attack on law-abiding Maine citizens, and a direct violation of our Maine Constitutional rights, specifically Article 1, Section 16:  “To keep and bear arms.  Every citizen has a right to keep and bear arms and this right shall never be questioned.”  This is a solution looking for a problem that Maine does not have.  I oppose any bill intending to strip Maine citizens of our Constitutional rights.

  • Maine has long been one of the safest States in the Nation.  We don’t need people from other states, with higher crime rates, telling us how to live.
  • Red Flag Laws allow – without the person’s prior knowledge and with very little evidence – someone’s firearms to be removed based on a petition by their family members (including former spouses or partners), household members or law enforcement.
  • Red Flag Laws have no due process: having your property removed BEFORE having your day in court is not an American value.

I oppose unconstitutional LD 1378, and it “ought not to pass.”
