[Due ASAP] Maine - Red Flag Hearing [Update]

Published on 25 June 2025 at 11:58

Background

On Wednesday, June 25th, the Joint Standing Committee will hold a work session and vote on Bloomberg's radical Red Flag Referendum. At this work session, lawmakers have the opportunity to send the referendum question to the floor to pass the bill through the legislative bodies, adopt a countermeasure, or send the ballot question directly to Maine voters. NRA members and Second Amendment advocates are urged to contact their lawmakers and encourage them to oppose efforts to implement this extreme gun control measure.

Maine's Red Flag referendum seeks to implement laws that would allow individuals to petition a court to suspend a person’s Second Amendment rights and to order the seizure of the person’s guns, despite that person never having been charged with or convicted of a crime. Such orders, based on weak and nebulous standards, can be issued before the gun owner is provided the opportunity to be heard or to present evidence. Governor Janet Mills (D), the Maine State Police, and a broad bipartisan coalition of lawmakers oppose this proposal, citing that it will "undermine" current Maine law and put law enforcement officers at risk.

Dear [Lawmaker] ,

As your constituent, I encourage you to oppose efforts to pass Red Flag laws in Maine. As you are likely aware, this Red Flag law would undermine current Maine law and implement a failed cookie-cutter gun control more akin to Massachusetts, California, and New York than Maine. Instead of passing a radical Red Flag law, Maine would be better served by funding critical mental health initiatives and supporting law enforcement officers in our state.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.
