[Due 3/19/2025] Maine - LD 609 - Biennial Budget

Published on 19 March 2025 at 16:37

Background

"Tomorrow, the legislative majority in Augusta is expected to ram through the state's next biennial budget -- a massive $11.3 billion spending bill, the most spending in our state's history -- with no Republican votes.

For those keeping score at home, this would be the third consecutive budget cycle where Democrats exclude Republicans and spend way beyond our means on a simple majority vote.

Keep in mind, Maine has a $118 million MaineCare shortfall in the current fiscal year and a projected shortfall above $400 million over the next two years.

Despite this reality, their plan makes zero reforms to out-of-control entitlements and other runaway spending in Augusta. It keeps the river of General Assistance money flowing to noncitizens in Portland, and does nothing to stop hardworking Mainers from footing the bill for able-bodied, childless adults to receive free healthcare coverage from the state."
